Fertility Program: Tubal Ligation Reversal
We have a successful program to reconnect your tubes after having a tubal ligation. The microscopic operation is done through a “mini-bikini” incision. This allows you to go home the same day and greatly decreases the cost of the operation. The mini-bikini incision is slightly longer than two inches. The ends of the tubes are microscopically reconnected in a three- to four-hour procedure. Most patients can go back to full activity (except heavy lifting or exercise) in three to four days.
Tubes remaining open: The tubes we have reconnected over the last 10 years have remained open in greater than 95 percent of patients.
Pregnancy Rates: The chances of getting pregnant after tubal ligation reversal depend on your age and the length of your tubes. The length of tube left depends on the type of tubal ligation previously performed. Pregnancy rates are greater than 70 percent for women less than 30 who have had clips applied using a laparoscopy or had their tubes tied after delivery. The success rates for women over 40 is unfortunately less than 10 percent.
Serious problems, such as injury to bladder or intestines, infection or serious bleeding are very uncommon, and occur in less than 1/100 surgeries.
What information is needed prior to surgery?
Our physicians will review your medical and surgical history with you. Prior to your consultation appointment, we recommend that you obtain the following:
Please bring these records with you to your first appointment.
Doing surgery to look inside with a laparoscope is the most accurate way to estimate your chances of success prior to surgery. However, this procedure usually costs more than the tubal reversal itself, so it is done only in selected cases as determined by you and your physician.
