Wright State Physicians to offer education seminars about weight loss surgery

running familyDAYTON, OHIO—Wright State Physicians will offer several education seminars about weight loss surgery, beginning Thursday, Jan. 19, from noon to 1 p.m., at Miami Valley Hospital in the Weber Center for Health Education seventh floor conference room (128 E. Apple St., Dayton, OH 45409). The session is free and open to the public.

The speaker is Joon Shim, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, a fellowship-trained, minimally invasive and bariatric surgeon with Wright State Physicians Surgery and an assistant professor of surgery at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. During the education session, she will discuss modern bariatric surgery, safety and concerns of current bariatric procedures, long-term outcomes of bariatric procedures, the future of bariatric surgery and the efficacy of the surgical treatment of obesity.

Shim specializes in general surgery, bariatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, reflux, hiatal hernia and endoscopy. She earned her medical degree and her master’s degree in public health from George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at University of Massachusetts and a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery at Brown University. She served as an active duty Army surgeon for four years and completed two tours as a combat trauma surgeon for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. She was awarded the Army's Meritorious Service Medal.

In addition to the Jan. 19 seminar, Shim will offer the same education seminar from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, at Miami Valley Hospital (30 East Apple St., Dayton, Ohio 45409) in the Frederick C. Smith Conference Center in MVH Conference Room 4 (6NW4). The same education seminar will be offered at Miami Valley Hospital South (2300 Miami Valley Dr., Suite 350, Centerville, Ohio 45459) in the Conference Center, room 1315, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, April 4, and Tuesday, June 13.
