Rheumatologist William E. Venanzi, M.D., joins Wright State Physicians

William VenanziWilliam E. Venanzi, M.D., FACP, a rheumatologist, joined Wright State Physicians and began seeing patients on Jan. 6 at the Wright State Physicians Health Center (725 University Blvd.) on the campus of Wright State University.

Venanzi, a retired colonel in the United States Air Force, was formerly the chief of the medical staff, 88th Medical Group, 88th Air Base Wing, Air Force Material Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He also served as director of medical education at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center.

In his new role with Wright State Physicians, Venanzi serves as a rheumatologist in the Department of Internal Medicine. He also is the chair of the Division of Rheumatology and an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. He has been teaching since 1997.

Venanzi is certified in internal medicine and rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a graduate of Loyola College in Baltimore, Md. He earned his medical degree in 1989 from the University of Maryland School of Medicine through the Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program. He entered extended active duty after becoming a distinguished graduate from the Aerospace Medicine Primary course. He was elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians and twice elected to the Board of Governors for the Society of Air Force Physicians.

He led 16 Critical Care Air Transport Teams over four deployments to Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. He was responsible for the evacuation of more than 475 critically wounded service members. He is the only U.S. Military rheumatologist to have earned the Air Medal, awarded for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial combat operations.
